Omega-3 Can Reduce Smoking Addiction

Many people already know that omega-3 has various benefits for the body, good for brain organs, eyes, heart, and joints. In addition, omega-3 was also able to help reduce smoking addiction.

Sources of omega-3 fatty acids can be obtained from fish, certain vegetables, wheat, and nuts. Besides obtained from natural ingredients, omega-3 is also widely produced in the form of supplements.

Omega-3 fatty acids consist of three types. In fish oil contained docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentanoic acid (EPA), and contained in some nuts and seeds. While plants contain alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) which processed the body into omega-3 fatty acids.

The harmful effects of smoking not only on the lungs, but also lower levels of omega-3 in the brain.

Research at the University of Haifa proves that omega-3 balance disorders are also associated with mental disorders, depression, and reduce the ability to cope with stress. When stress is associated with an increased risk of smoking because some people cope with stress with smoking.

The researchers reviewed 48 people aged 18-45 years who smoked more than ten cigarettes every day. Then, all participants were divided into two groups, namely being given a group of omega-3 capsules and a group given a placebo capsule (empty medication).

After 30 days, in the group who consumed omega-3 capsules, there was a decrease in the number of cigarettes by two cigarettes per day. Meanwhile, the group who received placebo capsule did not produce a significant change from the desire to smoke.

Other studies have shown that there is some possibility of low levels of omega-3 in smokers. It may also be due to the effect of cigarettes on tongue tasting, which in turn affects the selected foods.

It is possible that dietary intake patterns also affect the mechanism of the nervous system by releasing a brain chemical (neurotransmitter). This release of brain chemicals may cause smoking habits. Provision of omega-3 supplements in the study subjects was thought to restore brain function and reduce nicotine addiction.

Based on these studies, omega-3 is considered to have the ability to reduce smoking addiction due to nicotine. However, the effect of omega-3 is still to be investigated further whether it can be a significant effort to overcome smoking addiction, or even be a way of preventing smoking.
