Preeclampsia is still a frequent cause of death of pregnant women.
Preeclampsia is a complication in pregnancy characterized by high blood pressure, and can be accompanied by damage to organs (usually kidney and liver organ). Preeclampsia generally occurs after 20 weeks of gestation in women who previously had normal blood pressure.
The cause of the occurrence of preeclampsia is not known clearly and is influenced by several factors. Experts say that the initial process of preeclampsia begins with the placenta. The placenta is a tissue that grows in the womb to provide nutritional intake for the fetus during pregnancy.
In early pregnancy, maternal blood circulation to the placenta tissue will develop. However, it does not go smoothly in pregnant women with preeclampsia because the size of the blood vessels will actually shrink.
