Have you ever had an unbearable itch around your vagina? What the itchiness will become when you menstruate? If the answer is yes, it is a normal and common thing to happen.
Itching during vagina during menstruation is often disturbing and uncomfortable. According to dr. Fiona Amelia MPH, an itchy vagina, either before, during, or even after menstruation, results from vaginal dryness, fungal infections or hormonal changes. These factors can trigger a reaction that is later recognized by the brain as itching.
As women enter the period, there are many changes that occur around the area of femininity, including the vagina and uterus. Itching during menstruation can also occur due to the damp and poorly maintained vagina. Another factor that can trigger the itching is the use of the wrong pads, thus triggering the occurrence of irritation or allergies.
During the menstrual period, hormonal changes that occur also contribute to trigger itching around the vagina. Low estrogen levels during the menstrual period tend to make the vagina more dry and irritable. While at the end of the menstrual period, estrogen will reach its lowest levels and can make the vagina very itchy.
To reduce the itching frequency, make sure you maintain the cleanliness and moisture of the underwear. Also, keep the genital area clean with a normal pH (5.5) soap that does not contain antiseptic or fragrance. Instead, choose a vaginal washing soap containing lactic acid.
Get used to rinse the vagina with water running from front to back, to prevent infection. As much as possible avoid scratching the itch area so that the vagina is not irritated and eventually trigger the infection. Scratching the vagina can cause infection to spread quickly and is very dangerous.
In addition, regularly replace your pads during the menstrual period, at least three times a day. Avoid using bandages that have a high perfume content. Choosing a comfortable underwear and made of cotton can also help reduce itching during menstruation.
If the itching you are experiencing is caused by hormonal fluctuations, usually the itch will disappear a few days after the menstrual period. But if the itching continues to interfere, immediately do the examination to the doctor. It could be a sign of infection or inflammation around the vagina.
